Feeding your dog after castration or sterilisation
Sterilized
Overweight
Castration and sterilisation are common procedures, but they do change how your dog's body works — including how they process energy. Understanding this early makes it much easier to keep your dog in good shape for the long term.
Why weight can creep up
After the procedure, your dog's daily energy needs reduce significantly — often by around 30%. At the same time, appetite can remain just as strong as before. This combination means that continuing to feed the same amount as previously can gradually lead to weight gain, even in otherwise healthy, active dogs. Some breeds are naturally more food-motivated and may need closer attention. Labradors, golden retrievers, beagles, pugs, and French bulldogs are among those where portion awareness matters most.
Adjusting the feeding routine
If your dog has previously had free access to food throughout the day, moving to set mealtimes makes a real difference. It helps you keep track of exactly how much your dog is eating and supports a more consistent routine overall. Treats count too. They can add up quickly, and it is worth keeping daily treat intake to no more than around 20% of your dog's total energy allowance. When choosing treats, look for simple, natural ingredients and a lower fat content. Your Husse advisor can help you work out the right daily portion for your dog's size, age, and activity level — and adjust it over time as needed.
Choosing the right food
After castration or sterilisation, a formula with reduced fat and higher fibre content is generally a good fit. Fibre helps your dog feel satisfied between meals, which makes portion control easier in practice. L-carnitine is a useful ingredient to look for — it supports the body's natural fat-burning process and helps maintain a healthy weight over time. If you are unsure which product is the right choice for your dog's specific situation, your local Husse advisor is there to help. Getting the food right from the start is one of the most effective things you can do for your dog's long-term wellbeing.
