Bringing your kitten home is just the beginning. One of the most important steps in those first weeks is booking their first veterinary appointment — and the sooner the better.
Most vets recommend a first check-up within the first week or two of bringing your kitten home. This initial visit is a chance to make sure your kitten is in good health, pick up on anything that may need attention early, and put a vaccination schedule in place. It is also a valuable opportunity to ask any questions that have come up in those first busy days.
Kittens typically begin their core vaccinations from around eight to nine weeks of age, with a follow-up course a few weeks later. Your vet will also be able to advise on parasite prevention, microchipping, and when to consider neutering — all important parts of responsible kitten care in that first year.
It is worth getting your kitten comfortable with the carrier and the experience of travel before the appointment if you can. Short, calm trips in the carrier in the days beforehand can make the journey and the visit itself much less stressful for them.
